O'Neil tried out for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early year of 2005, while at high school. She was able to advance into the top 100 rounds because the judges were thrilled at her singing performance. O'Neil had received high praise from jury. But she was a victim of massive losses during the top 10 week as well as the Top 9 week of the finals. She ended up within the bottom three and then second place. The judges were shocked by this and proclaimed to the public that Melissa was the top contestant. O'Neil's performance was so consistently good, that he never fell into the top 3. Following two stunning performances on September 7, 2005, when O'Neil and Rex Goudie were able to make it into the final two contestants, judge Werner reported that newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest winner of the show's time . O'Neil was contacted immediately from Canadian Prime Minister Paul Martin, congratulating on her victory on Canadian Idol.
